Inter Miami drops their first game of the MLS Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 loss over Atlanta United.
The men in pink never really looked comfortable, and it showed with misplaced passes, short through balls, and lack of sharpness in the final third.
The turf doesn’t help, ever. (Fast surface, Atlanta’s annoyingly quick play style, etc.)
The only upside to the match is Miami now has the chance to close out the series at home, in a few days.
Here are Three Takeaways from Inter Miami’s loss vs. Atlanta United.
1.) David Martinez Does Well
Though he had a long injury layoff, alongside Noah Allen, Martinez was one of the best players on the field. The Paraguayan not only delivered a goal, but a standout defensive performance despite the goal.
His contribution from the back line highlighted how important he’ll be going forward should Miami make it out of the first round.
2.) No Busquets, No Party
Miami’s midfield was, notably, missing the calming presence of Sergio Busquets.
The Herons failed to fully dictate the game and passing tempo without the World Cup winner.
His vision and distribution would’ve helped Miami circulate possession with a fluidity that wasn’t seen at the Mercedes Benz Arena. Throughout the match, Miami struggled to maintain consistent forward momentum, which would’ve put Atlanta’s backline under more pressure.
Luckily, the 36-year-old should be back for game three next Saturday.
3.) Noah Allen Recognition
Lastly, Noah Allen’s defensive performance also stood out. The youngster put in a solid shift, containing Atlanta for most of the match.
His positional awareness and poise in one-on-one duels added a level of stability to Miami’s defense. Though Miami ultimately lost the match, Allen showed just how much he’s grown over the past year.
Let’s hope the defender can continue his good form.
Thoughts on the match? Think Miami can close it out next Saturday?
They will win the next one. I feel like that stadium is cursed. It will be good to win at him with Busi back.
Atlanta got Lucky the IMCF middle fielders got sick … second half really showed how important busquet and bright are
