Inter Miami goes 10 points clear in the Eastern Conference with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union.
Lionel Messi marked his return to the field with two goals and an assist, taking the Argentine up to 14 goals in the MLS regular season.
Like most players after a long injury layoff, Messi did take a few minutes to find the match. But, once the World Cup winner got into the groove, he was largely unstoppable.
Nabbing two goals within four minutes, Messi looked his usual self, leading Miami to their third straight win.
With one hand on the Supporters Shield, Miami are now 10 points clear of FC Cincinnati at the top of the East and has extended its lead in the Shield standings.
Here are Three Observations from Miami’s tough win over the Union.
1.) Messi Makes His Highly Anticipated Return to the Field

What more can be expressed about Lionel Messi that hasn’t already been said? The Argentine came back in a big way to help seal all three points for the men in pink.
The 37-year-old showed no signs of slowing down as he ended the night with two goals and an assist.
With Miami's impressive form, Messi seamlessly integrated into the team and was instrumental in the club’s three goals.
According to MLS Public Relations, Messi has become the fastest player in MLS history to produce 15 goals and 15 assists in his first 19 games.
His return shows just how much better this Miami side is with their talisman in the starting eleven.
2.) Noah Allen Plays Well in Place of Martinez
Although David Martinez’s mid-game injury was a difficult loss, Noah Allen filled in well. He may not have the height of his fellow defenders, but his positional sense and speed were key in slowing the Union attack down.
Tata on Noah after the match:
“Noah has his characteristics, when he has the chance, he’s always prepared. He is very valuable for us. The young players are very valuable to us. For me, it’s satisfactory. He always available. He got hit in the head, now, he’s trying to recover.”
3.) Stupid Yellows Hurt the Team - Again
Besides the injuries to Noah Allen and David Martinez, the unfortunate news from the match is that Tomas Avilés and Sergio Busquets will be suspended for Miami’s upcoming game against Atlanta United on Wednesday.
The Herons will be without two players who are crucial to the midfield/defense.
While Yannick Bright could slide into midfield in place of Busquets, the biggest question will be: Who will fill in for Avilés? Options include Ian Fray (the likeliest and the smartest option), Ryan Sailor, and Serhiy Kryvtsov.
What do you think of Miami’s performance? Let me know in the comments.
Silly me; I thought Messi’s return might disrupt the team’s rhythm. Happy to be wrong.
Also Drake is a king. What a game for him too.
