Inter Miami continued their 2024 schedule away at the LA Galaxy.
This was the second time the Herons faced Los Angelenos in club history, with the first match-up resulting in a 3-2 win for LA in April 2021.
However, unlike in the first game, Miami showed greater determination this time around.
The match started slow for the Herons as they tried to probe their way through the Galaxy defense.
Unfortunately, Miami’s transitional weaknesses began to show as the game progressed, with Joseph Paintsil and Riqui Puig dictating the tempo.
It was less so mistakes from Tomas Aviles and Serhiy Kryvtsov, but more so poor midfield giveaways and room on the flanks that made it easy for the Galaxy to break with speed.
The Galaxy eventually got the match's first goal in the 75th minute.
All seemed lost until Messi and Alba worked their old Barcelona magic to rescue a point away from home.
Though it wasn’t pretty, Miami is fortunate to pick up a result from this match. There will undoubtedly be things to work on once they return to Miami, but earning points on the road is something the Herons have had difficulty doing historically.
In the end, the men in pink need to rack up all the points they can get.
Here are the player ratings from Miami’s match-up against the LA Galaxy.
Goalkeeping, Defense:
🧤 Drake Callender - 10: This is the first time I’ve given a ten on here. He kept Miami in the game and made it possible for them to earn a point.
🏎️ DeAndre Yedlin - 6: Used his speed well, but was caught out of position one too many times.
🦌 Tomas Avilés - 6.4: Hustled, but could’ve done better to get back in time during transition moments.
🏋️ Serhiy Kryvtsov - 6.5: Like Avilés, didn’t do anything glaringly wrong. Did well to slow down Paintsil/Pec a couple of times.
💨 Jordi Alba - 7.4: Got the match-tying assist, yelled at the bench; did all the things!
Midfield:
🥨 Julian Gressel - 6.3: Kinda ghosted? Was better in possession compared to the RSL game.
🧮 Sergio Busquets - 6: I love Busquets, but these giveaways are starting to become frequent and concerning…
✌️ Diego Gomez - 7: Ended the game with two shots, five passes into the final third, four recoveries, and won 80% of his tackles. Think he’ll be an important piece for Inter Miami this season.
Attack:
🐐 Lionel Messi - 10: Another first-time ten on this list. Got the game-tying goal. Nuff’ said.
🔫 Luis Suárez - 5: This wasn’t a game where his skill set was needed. Miami needed Borgelin or Campana to help stretch the Galaxy back line. Suarez plays with the ball at his feet, perhaps the upcoming match against Orlando will better suit him.
🪽 Robert Taylor - 6: Like Suarez, just wasn’t his night.
Substitutes:
🛎️ Leonardo Campana - 6.5: Did well to help circulate the ball in the final minutes.
💈 David Ruiz - 7: Similarly, Ruiz put in a good shift, tracking back and helping push for the equalizer.
🦩 Lawson Sunderland - 6.8: Used his frame well and pushed the ball forward.
🦒 Shanyder Borgelin - 6.6: Would like to see him get more minutes! His work rate and ability to bully the opposition with his size are helpful during games like this.
A quick note on… Federico Redondo

Agree about Busi. It seems like that injury took more of a toll than we thought. I adore Suarez but they can’t play him to death either, especially with such a tight schedule. Messi and Drake are our kings. And congratulations to the Goat for 20 years of goals. Not a great game but enough for an away game this time.
Really would’ve like to see Campana be more assertive and go for goal towards the end there. Deferring to Messi is fine, but sometimes you gotta trust your instincts.
I think we’ll be fine once Redondo’s starting. I also wouldn’t mind seeing Sunderland get some of Gressel’s minutes — Julian looks out of shape and clunky out there.
Ultimately, it’s a point on a six hour road game on short rest, so as much as we wanted the W, the draw doesn’t seem so bad.
