And breathe…
After a subpar performance against Atlanta United on Wednesday, the Herons looked motivated as they fought back to a 3-3 draw against St. Louis CITY.
Goals from Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Jordi Alba saved the day for the men in pink in the final match before players join up with their national teams for the Copa América.
With the tie, Miami keeps its top spot in the Eastern Conference. Although there will undoubtedly be conversations surrounding Miami’s inability to keep consistent clean sheets, dropping points is the last thing Tata Martino’s men want to do in the end.
They avoided that and then some against St. Louis.
Here are Player Ratings from Miami’s draw against CITY.
Goalkeeping, Defense:
🧤 Drake Callendar - 7: Should’ve done better on St. Louis’ second goal, but came up huge as the game continued.
💨 Jordi Alba - 8.5: Great game from the left-back. His endless hustle and forward runs were a constant attacking threat for Miami. Got a goal and two assists.
🏋️ Serhiy Kryvtsov - 7.2: Not sure if he was taken off due to injury or tactics, but I would’ve kept him on considering CITY’s physicality.
🦌 Tomas Avilés - 7.4: A better game from ‘Toto'.’ Obviously, the inability to keep a clean sheet will sting, but he’s making fewer and fewer mistakes as his Inter Miami career continues.
🎻 Marcelo Weigandt - 7.6: That’s more like it from the Argentine. He was active in attack and was a menace in defense.
Midfield:
🐞 Federico Redondo - N/A: Get better, pls…
🧮 Sergio Busquets - 7.4: Had some sloppy passes that led directly to counter-attacking opportunities for CITY, but his passing and presence throughout the middle of the field got Miami out of tough situations.
💉 Matias Rojas - 6.5: Unfortunately, a non-factor for Miami in this game. Will likely be off with the Paraguayan National Team for Copa América as well.
Attack:
🐐 Lionel Messi - 8: I know he’s been doing this for decades, but I’m continually shocked to see Messi surrounded by three defenders but still able to come out with the ball unscathed.
🔫 Luis Suárez - 7.6: I’m going to run this tweet into the ground until the season ends, haha.
🪽 Robert Taylor - 6.8: Didn’t get on the scoresheet, but he just gels really well with Messi and Suarez, I don’t see how Tata can drop him once Miami gets deeper into the season.
Substitutes:
💪 Benjamin Cremaschi - 8.3: Came off the bench and instantly made an impact. His style of play was exactly what Miami needed to help unlock that CITY defense.
⛵ Ryan Sailor - 6.5: Not the best match from the Super Draft pick. Struggled a bit with CITY’s physicality. But, I do appreciate his eagerness to compete.
🥨 Julian Gressel - 7: Got the game-tying assist and looked solid in his 20-minute cameo.
🛎️ Leonardo Campana - 7.3: Excited to see him lead the line and help carry the attack once Messi and Co. leave for Copa América. He looks hungry and eager.
Coaching:
🔢 Tata Martino - 6.5: While a draw is preferable to a loss, I’m still thinking back to Wednesday’s match against Atlanta. Redondo was visibly tired and probably needed to be substituted earlier. Unfortunately, it seemed like his fatigue caught up with him vs. CITY which led to some abductor discomfort. On the bright side, the subs were inspiring and helped push the team forward. Luckily, the team will have some time off before their next match on June 15th.
Tata on Diego Gomez:
“In truth, we’ve [spoken with the Paraguayan team.] He started running this week. He’s done little minutes on the field. He’s in no condition to go to Copa América, but that’s Paraguay’s decision. He’s fine, but he’s just beginning his recovery.”
Tata stated he should be fine for the Olympics.

St. Louis is my hometown team so they’re the only other MLS team I really follow. I knew Burki would make it tough because he’s the best keeper in the league. Messi and Alba were insane as usual but our defense is shaky and they took advantage of it. Not totally disappointed with the draw which StL does a lot lol.
I like Calendar but he needs to step up and do better. He is a good goalkeeper but sometimes he just leaves me scratching my head. He reminds me a lot of Ter Stegen, sometimes he makes herculean saves that no one else does, and other times he is just a statue.
Alba was our hero today. Happy for him. Perfect match.
