Inter Miami loses its first game in MLS play with an astonishing 4-3 loss to FC Dallas.
In what was a heavily rotated side by Javier Mascherano, the Herons started the game off slow, eventually building up a 3-1 lead by the 56th minute.
After that, due to misguided tactical tweaks and fatigue, the boys in pink subsequently conceded three goals in 15 minutes to lose what would’ve been three guaranteed points.
With all eyes on the 2nd leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-final tomorrow, fans and the front office will hope Miami can produce another remontada.
Here are Player Ratings from Inter Miami’s loss vs. Dallas.
Goalkeeping
🧤 Drake Callender - 7.3: Glad to see him starting again! Unfortunately, he did concede four goals, which won’t reflect well on any player in defense.
Defense:
🇵🇾 David Martinez - 8: Played well, looked surprisingly comfortable at left-back. Got a goal, shame about the result, however.
🦅 Maxi Falcon - 8.2: Also had a great game, and it showed how much the team needed him when he was substituted in the 65th minute.
🧔♂️ Gonzalo Lujan - 6.9: Not a bad match from the youngster, but he was out of position when Dallas got the equalizer to make it 3-3.
🍳 Ian Fray - 8.4: Showed his class once again. The only reason why I can’t see him being a full-time starter is his injury history. Besides that, the job should be his to lose.
Midfield:
🦁 Leo Afonso - 7: Would like to see him get more playing time. Had good hold-up play and had a few great runs in behind that weren’t picked up by his teammates.
🍝 Yannick Bright - 8.3: Probably a penciled-in starter for this team moving forward. Sorry Redondo!
🦒 Tomas Avilés - 7.3: I like this “Put Tomas in midfield as a defensive midfielder” experiment Mascherano has going on. It’s been intriguing to watch.
💪 Benjamin Cremaschi - 8.5: Had a good game as Miami’s ‘creative outlet,’ for lack of a better term. Nearly won a penalty for the side and ended the game with the most created chances (4) and an assist.
Attack:
🙏 Allen Obando - 8: Happy to see him get his first goal!
🦌 Fafa Picault - 7.9: I see some fans give him flak online sometimes, which is rather confusing. Picault’s game is built on speed, getting into good spots, and stretching opposition backlines. When he’s not doing that (in a slower, more possession-based style), his impact does tend to be limited unless he’s getting in behind the defense. Against Dallas, the South Florida native did that several times, resulting in Miami’s early 3-1 lead. I hope Mascherano can find a way to integrate his playing style into his first-choice starting eleven.
Substitutes:
🐥 Noah Allen - 7.6: Probably brought on a bit too late to make any proper impact, but still looked solid as always.
🐞 Federico Redondo - 7.3: Like Allen, brought on too late to make any real momentum switch.
🧉Tadeo Allende - 7.1: Tried to get in behind Dallas’ backline, but couldn’t quite get the outcome Mascherano was looking for.
💣 Telasco Segovia - 7: Didn’t really impact the match much.
Coaching:
🔢 Javier Mascherano - 7.3 : The first 60 minutes of the match were impeccably coached. It was spot on tactically, and Mascherano nullified a lot of Dallas’ attack. Unfortunately, after that, Miami couldn’t deal with Dallas switching to a back three, which saw them lose their first MLS game of the season.
Thoughts on the match? How do you think the team will do against Vancouver tomorrow?
Sorry to say it but Callender should have blocked two of those goals. He'll be traded by the end of the year. Ustari stays the starter the rest of the year.
