Inter Miami advances to the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16 after an impressive two-game stretch that saw them beat FC Porto and draw Brazilian giants Palmeiras.
The Men in Pink stunned the world by getting out of a difficult group, and doing so in style.
Goals from Lionel Messi, Tadeo Allende, Luis Suarez, and Telasco Segovia helped push the South Florida side through to the knockout rounds, something no other MLS team accomplished.
With Paris Saint-Germain as their next opponent, getting a win may be hard, borderline impossible. But, with momentum on their side and good vibes surrounding the organization, why not them?
Here are three observations from Miami’s final two group stage games.
Miami Makes History
Inter Miami not only became the first MLS team to beat a European side in any competitive fixture, but they were the only American team to advance to the round of 16.
Despite the highs and lows of the MLS regular season, getting to the next round of the Club World Cup will do wonders for team morale.
When the club eventually returns to regular league play, their time at the Club World Cup will undoubtedly give them some air under their wings as they push for a playoff position.
Is MLS Cup finally on the cards this year?
Segovia is The Real Deal
When Telasco Segovia first signed with the team in the winter transfer window, several South American writers and pundits spoke highly about the acquisition. With Diego Gomez leaving for Brighton at the time, many fans wondered who could step in.
Segovia is showing that he’s able to do that and then some, contributing silky smooth technical ability alongside a quiet physicality that makes him the ideal MLS midfielder.
Against Porto, the ex-Casa Pia man showed his quality by popping up in the right spots, progressing the ball with composure, all while having the energy to get back on defense.
Besides his goal, he ended the match with six passes into the final third, two interceptions, two recoveries, and completed 93% of his passes.
Although it is still very early in his Inter Miami career, the Herons have another great young player on their roster.
Happy Birthday, Messi!

Feliz Cumpleaños to the greatest Footballer of All Time, Lionel Messi.
After signing with the club in 2023, the World Cup winner has won two trophies for the team, broken multiple records, and continues to make history every time he steps foot on the field.
As Inter Miami gets set to take on his former club PSG in the Club World Cup Round of 16, may Messi continue to show ‘his magic’ as the Herons look to further etch their name in history.
Thoughts on this Cinderella run from Inter Miami? Let me know in the comments.
They’ve definitely exceeded expectations. Is it likely they’ll beat PSG, probably not but it’s not impossible.
MLS still has Miami on the schedule to play Atlanta on Sat, the day before PSG is on the schedule. I don’t think so. Another reason why MLS sucks! They can’t even f’in’ plan a season schedule well.
